Dear Dinobone,

Questions about She'll Be Coming 'Round the Mountain

  • Who is the 'she' in the song?
  • What is the subject of the song?
  • What is the structure or form of the song?
  • Why do they kill the old red rooster (in another version)in the song?

Dear Writers,
We can't find any reference to who the she is in the song. We don't think it was any historical person. Our guess is that it could have been a girl or woman made up for the song. It ALSO could have been the stagecoach (or even a train) itself. Often, vehicles of transportation (like boats) were called she. "She'll Be Coming 'Round the Mountain" is a traditional American folk song,

The song was written sometime between 1850-1900. No one knows who wrote it. In the Old West, meeting the train or the horse-drawn coach when it came to town was an exciting event. People would meet friends and relatives and get their mail. The song was also used as a work song by people working on the railroad.

Although not exactly a textbook 'call and response,' the song is reminiscent of that style. The call changes (She'll be driving six white horses)while the response stays the same (When she comes).

As far as the rooster, our guess is that they kill the old red rooster to cook him for dinner. Not sure, however, if rooster meat is tougher than chicken meat(smile).
