Dear Dinobone,
Saw some info on Dinobones about "Ghost of John".
There is another source for "Ghost of Tom". The song is not "traditional" but is attributed to Martha Grubb. Here is how this source (a book of American folk music) shows the music. First note is E. I remember the word "flesh" being "skin", and have never heard of Tom being called John.
Em Am Em
Have you seen the ghost of Tom?
Em Am Em
Long white bones with the skin all gone
Em Am
Ooooooooh Oooooh Oooooooh
Em B Em D Em
Wouldn’t it be chilly with no flesh on?

Dear Dinobone,
Do you know where I can download the song "Wouldn't it be chilly with no skin on"? I remember singing that song back in the 2nd grade, and I haven't heard it in years!
Dear Writer,
I can't find any downloadable music but here is a place you can purchase the sheet music for Ghost of John. Maybe you can track a piano player down who'll play it for you and you can tape record it. I've never bought from this company but I'll give you the info:

Dear Dinobone,
Do you know history on the song "Ghost of John?"
Dear Writer,
I'm afraid it's history has been lost. It's listed as written by "Anonymous" which means we don't know who wrote it. It has a wonderful spooky melody and lyrics though. Here is one version of the lyrics:
Have you seen the ghost of John
Long white bones with the flesh all gone
Ooooh
Wouldn't it be chilly with no skin on?

Dear Dinobone,
Is the author of the Halloween sing "Ghost of John" known, or has that been lost through the years?
Dear Writer,
As far as I can find out, the name of the songwriter that wrote "Ghost of John" has been lost. Another version of the same song is called "Ghost of Tom". A good resource for folk song lyrics is at the Mudcat Cafe's Digitrad Lyric Search http://www.mudcat.org/threads.cfm

Dear Dinobone,
What are the traditional words to the American Halloween song, "Ghost of John"
Dear Writer,
There are different versions of "Ghost of John" also titled "Ghost of Tom." There are also slightly different melodies. Here's the version I know. Happy Halloween!
Have you seen the ghost of John?
Long white bones with the flesh all gone?
Oooohhh...
Wouldn't it be chilly with no skin on?

Dear Dinobone,
Find me a song about human bones.
Dear Writer,
Along with "Dry Bones" (see messages below), there is song called "Ghost of John" that goes like this:
Have you seen the ghost of John?
Long white bones with the flesh all gone?
Ooh....
Wouldn't it be chilly with no skin on?
Your friend, Dinobone
